Disgraced former Dublin Fianna Fáil county councillor Seán (John) Gilbride, who had faced planning corruption charges and was out on bail was buried yesterday.
Gilbride was one of four former county councilors charged with taking bribes to vote for land re-zoning from business man Jim kennedy who has been charged with 16 counts of corruption.
Gibride began his career in teaching, in Balbriggan in 1972 and ended with his retirement as a principal in 2005. He was also involved in drug awareness campaigns, Fingal County Council and vocational education committees.
But how will he be remembered? as a good man?an honest man? Or will he be remembered as just another (corrupt?) politician who betrayed his family, friends colleagues, constituents and pupils? I know how I will remember him. However, my Christian upbringing prevents me from speaking ill of the dead.
The 2000 Fianna Fáil report on payments to politicians found that Gilbride received £16,500 from three sources between 1991 and 1997. He said he never asked for anything, or sought any inducement for his vote. Yeah Right!!!
