Court sittings boost local economy
TENS of thousands of euro have been pumped into the local economy in recent weeks with some of the country’s top legal eagles staying in the city for the High Court sittings.
Since the multi million refurbishment of Kilkenny courthouse the High Court has been sitting on the regular basis in the city with a great spin off. “When the High Court is sitting it is like high summer. It has been a huge boost for business and without it I am not sure if we would have stayed open,” one popular restaurant owner said.
Restaurants and hotels reported an increase in trade with some restaurants having to turn away customers at lunchtime because of the increase in business. Many of the legal practitioners are based in Dublin so they stay in the city’s hotels dining out each evening. “What we made over the past two weeks is comparable to what we would take in during the Arts Festival and that injection of cash helps us to keep running our business during the quiet times. To be honest the addition of the High Court and other court sittings in the new courthouse has half saved us,” one business person said. http://www.kilkennypeople.ie/news/local/court_sittings_boost_local_economy_1_2528090
