Patrick Kissane To Contest Anti Freedom Of Speech Charges.

Wednesday July 20 2011
A MAN accused of inciting hatred against Travellers on Facebook has indicated he will contest the charge.
Patrick Kissane (27) is the first person in Ireland to be charged in relation to the alleged publication of racist material on the social networking site.
He is accused of actions likely to stir up hatred on December 1, 2009.
The charge relates to the setting up of an anti-Traveller Facebook page called 'Promote the use of Knacker Babies as Bait'.
The page also displayed the words: "Instead of using animals for shark bait, they could use knack babies. Also as food at feeding time in the zoo and for testing new drugs for viruses."
It is alleged that the material, which was seen by other people outside of the accused's residence, was threatening, abusive and insulting and was intended to stir up hatred.
At Killarney District Court yesterday, his solicitor Patrick F O'Connor said the matter was likely to be contested.
Judge James O'Connor remanded Mr Kissane, of Knockasarnett, Killarney, Co Kerry, on continuing bail to a court sitting on September 30.
