Gardaí in Cork are investigating after a woman was sexually assaulted while returning home from a night out.The woman, who is in her 60s, was attacked by a man as she was walking home from bingo in Charleville at about 10.15pm last night.
The man attacked her from behind and dragged her into the driveway of a house near the Turrets area. He beat her and sexually assaulted her before fleeing.
The woman made her way on to the road where she flagged down a passing motorist who brought her to Charleville Garda station. She was later brought to South Infirmary Victoria University Hospital for treatment at the sexual assault unit.
Gardaí cordoned off the scene and officers are today carrying out a technical examination of the scene for forensic evidence.
Detectives believe the woman may have been hit with an implement as she suffered severe head injuries in the attack.
They have issued the description of the attacker as being in his 20s and wearing a hoodie and jeans.
