The horrific attack took place at Mount St Laurence cemetery in Limerick city and gardai are attempting to trace three assailants who are responsible for the crime.
A garda spokesman described the incident as "a particularly cowardly crime" and said they were appealing for the public's assistance.
The 45-year-old woman, who is from Co Limerick, was alone as she visited her parents' grave in the city cemetery last Friday.
At 5.30pm, as she was standing at her parents' grave, she was approached by three men who were all aged in their 20s and wearing hoodies.
Immediately, they started hitting her repeatedly with a weapon -- suspected to be a riding crop -- and stole her handbag.
The beige handbag contained a Nokia C1 mobile phone, a Kodak camera, a silver Armani watch, reading glasses, €40 in cash and bank cards. The culprits then fled in the direction of Bengal Terrace.
Anyone with information on the incident should contact Roxboro garda station, Limerick, on 061-214340 or 1800-666-111.
